About

About the course

Course content

This is the second of two practicum courses in the PPU program. The course consists of at least 40 days of supervised, varied, and assessed practicum. PPU4114 presupposes and builds on the competence achieved in the practicum course PPU4113.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • has knowledge of the school as an organization, collaboration with parents, and other relevant partners
  • has in-depth knowledge of current laws and regulations for professional practice
  • has knowledge of children and young people in difficult life situations, their rights, and how to initiate necessary measures according to current legislation

Skills

The student:

  • can lead and facilitate teaching sequences that promote good academic and social learning processes
  • can use varied teaching methods, differentiate and adapt instruction in accordance with the current curriculum framework, and create a motivating and inclusive learning environment
  • can describe indicators of competence, assess, and document pupils’ learning

General Competence

The student:

  • demonstrates a professional attitude and can critically reflect on academic, professional ethical, and educational policy issues
  • can independently further develop their own competence and contribute to the development of colleagues and the school
  • can build relationships with pupils and parents and collaborate with actors relevant to the school system

Learning methods and activities

The practicum shall be carried out in the student’s two teaching subjects. Students with only one subject will complete all practicum in that subject. All practicum is supervised and takes place in authentic professional situations with pupils in school. Students must have practicum experience in both primary and secondary education during the PPU program. For students with a background in performing arts, up to 50% of the practicum may be completed in a cultural school. Students with a background in common core subjects in upper secondary education should meet pupils from different educational programs during the practicum. Practicum may be conducted individually or in pairs.

Normally, the practicum is carried out over 8 weeks in the spring semester. A complete practicum comprises at least 40 days. The student must follow normal working days at the practicum school, participate in school meetings, alternative learning activities, and courses in the "inner life of the school."

In addition to school-based practicum, there is also some instruction on campus. Campus instruction consists of theme days, lectures, and partnership teaching.

All school-based practicum is mandatory. Absence due to illness must be reported immediately to the practicum teacher and the school coordinator. Absence does not change the requirement for the practicum’s scope. This means that all missed practicum days must be made up later.

Compulsory assignments

  • Reflection log
  • Development talk
  • Practice visits
  • Knowledge about the school as an organisation
  • 75% participation in lectures at Campus

Further on evaluation

The final assessment in the course is a holistic evaluation of the teaching practicum related to learning objectives, including associated practicum reports, practicum follow-up, and mandatory activities. All reports from practicum teachers and follow-up teachers must be approved to receive a "Pass" in the course.

If the student is at risk of receiving a "Fail," they must receive written notice informing them of this. The notice must be sent no later than three weeks before the end of the practicum period. If a student at the end of the practicum period demonstrates actions or behavior that clearly do not provide grounds for passing, the student may still receive a "Fail" even if prior notice was not given.

Students who experience challenges during practicum may be offered an extended practicum period if there is insufficient basis for assessment despite all mandatory activities being approved. If students fail to attend the extended practicum or do not contact the practicum coordinator, this will normally result in the student not receiving a final assessment in the course.

The student is entitled to one new practicum period if the first attempt is assessed as "Fail" or is not approved (cf. Study Regulations § 5-10 (2)). In a new practicum period, mandatory activities related to practicum may need to be completed again. The practicum coordinator makes individual assessments of the scope of the new practicum. For a detailed description of the assessment in the course, see the study and teaching plan for the academic year.
