About

About the course

Course content

The master’s thesis consists of an in-depth academic project within psychological science and technology. Drawing on psychological theories, previous empirical research, and data collected (theoretical/empirical) for their project, students will produce a thesis at the appropriate level that answers a research question(s). The thesis must be written in line with the relevant guidelines regarding the structure and content of the department.

The research process commences with the assignment of a supervisor, the selection of a topic (in collaboration with the assigned supervisor), and the signing of a master thesis agreement. Afterwards, the department approves the topic and supervisory appointment, and students develop a scientifically rigorous action plan. The process ends with the plan's implementation and the thesis' production. A 60-credit master’s thesis may either be a theoretical project with significantly richer scope and depth or a study employing research methods where the student needs to invest substantial resources in training (e.g., advanced lab-based procedures, internships).

Mandatory seminars are scheduled annually for students to present their ideas and/or findings. These sessions, usually occurring once a year, offer students opportunities to receive and provide feedback. The dates for these seminars will be communicated in advance.

Learning methods and activities

Type of teaching: Self-study with supervision

Work on the master’s thesis will be a combination of independent activity and guided work. Academic supervision will ensure that the student acquires the necessary knowledge, that all parts of the work meet satisfactory quality standards (e.g., in data collection and processing), and that the project as a whole is conducted in accordance with current research ethics guidelines.

The master’s thesis seminar in the second semester includes information on how to select a topic, an introduction to potential supervisors, and guidance on project description development. The seminar in the third semester includes student presentations of their topics, where they receive constructive feedback from other students and faculty. Participation in the master’s thesis seminar must be approved before the thesis can be submitted.

Compulsory assignments

  • Mandatory participation in the master's thesis seminar

Further on evaluation

Assessment form: Master's thesis in monograph form or in article form. Oral presentation and examination of the task, where the task is the basis for the evaluation. The oral examination consists of a presentation from the student of about 10 minutes and an interview. Oral examination is used to adjust the grade. The student can choose an open or closed exam. If there is an open exam, there may be attendees present during the examination, if there is a closed examination only the committee and the student are present. When choosing an open exam, the student has the opportunity to bring up to five people. The student informs the examiner at the department, when submitting the thesis, whether it should be open or closed, so that the sensors are notified in advance of the examination.
