Course content
The four courses comprising The Psychologist Role (30 credits in total) aim to provide students with knowledge and experience of different types of psychological work. Students will also gain a broad understanding of the personal and relational prerequisites as well as professional competence required of psychologists, in addition to the ability to reflect on the importance of these factors.
This series of courses is central to the ongoing suitability assessment, cf. Regulations on suitability assessment in higher education, § 2 and 4. An ongoing suitability assessment is carried out throughout the course of one’s studies, as it is based on the student's professional and personal disposition for working as a health professional.
Central themes for The Psychologist’s Role 4 will be self-care as a psychologist, the basic components and structure of the intake session with the user / patient, as well as an introduction to record keeping. With regards to observational training, students will also gain knowledge and experience of the health and welfare system's organization as well as the practice of the psychologist role in the specialist care service.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
- The students have acquired basic knowledge of models for cooperation and collaboration in the healthcare system, with a special focus on specialist services.
- Students have in-depth knowledge of the health and welfare system’s organization, as well as laws, rules and guidelines related to record keeping.
- Students have acquired knowledge of the basic components and structure of the intake session with a user / patient. The student can also describe the processes central to the establishment of trust and the therapeutic alliance.
- Students have knowledge of inclusion, equality, and non-discrimination, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion and worldview, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and age, such that students contribute to ensuring equal services for all groups in society.
Skills:
- The student can analyze and relate critically to their own values, roles and functioning in meetings with users and collaborators.
- The student is able to document a patient history in the medical record, in accordance with current regulations.
- The student demonstrates a good ability to use the Norwegian language clearly and effectively when interacting with fellow students, patients, relatives, and colleagues, and adapts their communication to the situation and the recipient.
General competence:
- The student has knowledge of how to apply psychological knowledge and skills to their own self-care.
- The student has broad knowledge and an ability to reflect about the relationship between their personal and relational characteristics as well as their academic competence to practice the role of a psychologist.
Learning methods and activities
Except for some joint lectures and observational training in first line service, the students are divided into groups of approximatively 10 students led by a teacher. The group activities consist of exercises and discussions that are related to the learning objectives, as well as preparatory and finishing work tied to observational training.

Further on evaluation
Students are permitted to take the course once more if the first attempt is assessed as not passed. When repeating the course, only the components assessed as not passed must be retaken.The course is evaluated in accordance with Academic Regulations for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) §5-10 (2) and Guidelines for the implementation and evaluation of clinical practice in psychology education - the clinical programme in psychology, NTNU.
