About the course

Course content

PSYK4522 will provide experience with both the investigation of a theoretical problem with community-psychological relevance and project-oriented work aimed at community psychological or health promotion work with different age groups.

The student is given preparatory teaching in community psychology linked to a subsequent community psychology practice. Examples of topics that will be covered are systems work, the municipal psychologist's everyday work, Sami and minority perspectives, inclusion and working methods in practice.

The student is given experience in practical work within community psychology and must become familiar with both the professional opportunities and limitations associated with this professional practice. The project practice must be based on working methods, values ​​and approaches within clinical community psychology and health promotion.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • has in-depth knowledge of practical and clinical community psychology work in Norway
  • can apply disciplinary knowledge to initiate change processes in groups and systems
  • can apply fundamental principles of supervision and consultation, and is able to carry out independent change work through others
  • has knowledge of inclusion, equality and non-discrimination, regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion or belief, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and age, enabling the candidate to contribute to equitable services for all groups in society
  • has knowledge of, and an understanding of, Sámi rights and the status of the Sámi as an Indigenous people, and of how to provide culturally sensitive treatment

Skills

The student can:

  • apply their knowledge and skills in accordance with health and welfare policy guidelines for health promotion and preventive work, and analyze related ethical issues
  • apply their knowledge and skills to the documentation and communication of public health, clinical, diagnostic and other professional matters to, for example, patients/service users, relatives, colleagues, partners, public authorities, and legal bodies
  • analyze and critically assess knowledge on health promotion and prevention, and independently apply relevant methods and modes of working at different intervention levels, including broader societal levels

General Competence

The student can:

  • contribute to ensuring that users, citizens, or services participate in the development of accessible services for all groups in society
  • use their knowledge to plan, lead, and carry out small projects
  • communicate with specialists, decision-makers, and the general public about professional issues related to health promotion and preventive work
  • reflect on and apply knowledge that contributes to equitable services for all, including Sámi patients
  • understand the individual within a context and critically analyze how community psychology approaches can be applied in a clinical setting
  • apply knowledge of the competencies and responsibilities of other professional groups in order to collaborate interdisciplinarily, interprofessional, cross-sector, or across organizations and levels, as well as initiate collaboration to provide coherent and high-quality services for users
  • contribute to critical reflection, innovation, service development, and systematic and/or quality-improving processes as part of ensuring service quality and further developing services

Learning methods and activities

Will include mandatory internship preparation lectures and seminars, and group guidance related to projects.

Submission of practice report and presentation of it in plenary.

The subject is evaluated in accordance with the Guidelines for the implementation and evaluation of clinical practice

Compulsory assignments

  • 80% attendance at lectures
  • 80% participation in practice

The examination consists of two parts, each counting 50%, and both must be passed in order to pass the course:

  1. Individual semester assignment
  2. Group-based practice report

All aids are permitted. When using AI tools, NTNU’s guidelines must be followed.

Previously approved compulsory activities remain valid when retaking the examination.

If a student fails, they may submit a revised version of their assignment in the following semester. A note must be submitted together with the new thesis, which shows what changes have been made. In addition, the old thesis must also be submitted.

For the group-based practice report, a common grade is normally given for the report. In rare cases, however, it may be appropriate to assess the candidates differently
