Course content
This course provides students with detailed knowledge of key concepts, theories and models in the field, primarily emphasizing theories of language as social action and sociocultural perspectives on communication. This includes focusing on how we create meaning in and through communication and which function utterances and texts have in specific communication situations. Dialogic and interactionist perspectives on language and communication are emphasized, in addition to diversity perspectives on communicative practice. Given that much of the theoretical foundation arises from research into either verbal or written communication, the course will also emphasize the interaction between different modalities (speech, text, signs) and how these can be understood and studied.

Learning methods and activities
Teaching methods and activities are dialogue-based, requiring active participation from the students. The teaching requires students to acquire theoretical knowledge and apply this knowledge in critical reflection. The course uses flipped classroom, where students work on chosen concepts and theories in plenary sessions and in groups.

Form of assessment and grading scale:
Written examination, 6 hours. The objective is for the students to demonstrate their knowledge of key theories and concepts and ability to independently and critically discuss these theories and concepts.
Grading scale: AF.
Compulsory activities:
Students must submit a presentation of a chosen concept, theory or model from the syllabus in the form of a podcast, video or blog post, shared with their fellow students on Blackboard. Students may submit their presentation individually or in groups of two or three.
