Course content

The course will present frames and assumptions for various social research traditions. Through dialogue-based lectures/seminars and student presentations, emphasis is placed on developing creative research designs and a critical attitude towards research. Criteria for the quality of research is given considerable weight.

Learning outcome

- be familiar with different research designs
- be able develop and justify a research design for a project at the size of a Master thesis
- be able to give a critical assessment of others' research design

Learning methods and activities

The lectures/seminars will be given in February/March

Form of assessment: Assignment with presentations in plenary. Both assessment and presentation are graded as pass or fail.

Each part counts for half of the grade.

All parts of the evaluation must be retaken when the exam is repeated.

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Required previous knowledge

Bachelor's degree in sociology. The requirement must be fulfilled to be admitted to the course.
