Course content

-Nursing care  for patiens admitted to hospitale for treatment   and assessment -Nursing care for patient  with  serious  life threatening illness -Nursing care for terminale patient -Nursing carefor the patients next of kin -Nursing care for children and their  next of kin

Learning outcome

-Knowledge: -After having completed the course, the student has  knowledge about: -Illness and conditions that influence  the patient´s health -Basic needs of patients with acute , critical and surgical illness -Nursing care for dying  patients  and their next of kin -Communication with patients with  surgical illness, and understands  the importance  of information  and  counsel to patients and their next of kin -Individual  health  promotion and disease prevention -Medication administration  in a surgical  ward -Nursing laws and regulations -The  competence  of other professionals groups -Skills: -After completing  the course, the student  should be able for: -Provide nursing care for partient  with acute ,critical  and  surgical conditions  -Apply relevant knowledge in the  delivery  of nursing  care  -Document  nursing  care  based on the  nursing process -Communicate  and cooperate with patients and their next og kin  -Give information , and counsel patiens  and their next of kin -Communicate  and cooperate  with  other nurses and professional  groups -Promote health   and prevent  futher disease  for individual patients -Administer medications safely and responsibly -Plan  and deliver  nursing care independently -Deliver safe nursing care in accordance with professional ethics and relevant laws regulations -General competence: -After completing  the course, the student should: -Demonstrate a critical  attitude  towards  nursing  and the  care services -Deliver evidence- based nursing with a caring attitude

-Clinical studies (clinical placement) -Supervision -Refliection , individually and in groups -interprofessional learning

Further on evaluation

The subject is assessed to pass/fail. A mid- and final assessment is carried out. In the case of "possibly not passed" and "not passed" subject, the student must be notified in accordance with "Retningslinjer for gjennomføring og vurdering av veiledet praksisstudier ved Fakultet for Medisin og Helsevitenskap, Norges teknisk-naturvitenskapelige universitet (NTNU)". To pass the subject the following is required: - 90% study participation in the subject. - Approved work requirements (see curriculum for clinical studies in nursing). If a subject is assessed to fail, the whole subject must be retaken. In accordance with "Forskrift om studier ved Norges teknisk-naturvitenskaplige universitet (NTNU)" §5-10, the student has access to retake the subject once, if the first attempt is assessed to fail.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Nursing (050SY)

Required previous knowledge

Clinical studies in nursing 3th term- passed subjects from 1th term except SM100616 and passed clinical studies in 2th term. Clinical studies in nursing 4th semester - passed all subjects from 1st and 2th term and clinical studies in 3th term.
