About the course
Course content
The course will provide knowledge and experience regarding global health challenges, disease panorama and treatment, cultural understanding and culturally sensitive nursing through clinical placements in collaboration with international partners.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
After completing the course, the student should:
- Have knowledge about culture and culturally sensitive nursing.
- Have knowledge about global health issues and health promotion.
- Have knowledge about the role and responsibilities of the nurse in the health services where the clinical nursing practice takes place.
- have insight into interdisciplinary work at the clinical placement
- Have knowledge about health, disease and treatment in a global perspective.
- Understand the significance of international collaboration in research and development.
Skills:
After completing the course, the student should:
- Use relevant knowledge and understanding in the provision of safe and holistic nursing care, based on expected level of knowledge and experience.
- Demonstrate cultural sensitivity in the provision of nursing care.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate and cooperate in a new cultural context.
General competence:
After completing the course, the student should:
- Demonstrate ability to reflect critically and ethically upon relevant aspects of health care, nursing practice and treatment of diseases.
- Show ability to be self-sufficient, innovative and adaptable in a new clinical environment.
Learning methods and activities
Clinical studies/placement. Lectures. Preparations before clinical placement. Individual assignments. Group assignment. Reflection group. Homecoming seminar.

Further on evaluation
General requirements:
- All practice subjects require 90% study participation
- As a general rule, the student follows rotation prepared by partner at the university
Detailed information about compulsory requirements and activities will be announced at the start of the course.
If the student receives the grade "Not Passed", the course in its entirety (including compulsory activities) must be retaken in Norway.
Specific conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
Nursing (BSPL)
Required previous knowledge
Admission to the programme of study Bachelor in Nursing (BSPL) is required.
Prior to taking the course in the 5. Semester, the student is required to have passed the following courses: SYA/SYG/SYT1000, SYA/SYG/SYT1001, SYA/SYG/SYT1003KOM SYA/SYG/SYT1002, SYA/SYG/SYT2100, SYA/SYG/SYT2101(HJE/KIR/MED/PSY), SYA/SYG/SYT2103(HJE/KIR/MED/PSY), EXPH0400.
Prior to taking the course in the 6. Semester, the student is required to have passed the following courses: SYA/SYG/SYT2102 og SYA/SYG/SYT2300(HJE/KIR/MED/PSY).
