About

About the course

Course content

This course provides you a fundamental introduction into the planning and design of roads and other types of transport infrastructure. You will learn about the objectives of infrastructure and the various needs of users and vehicles. You get introduced to key concepts in traffic safety and traffic calculations. You will also learn the geometric design requirements of roads and railways and the calculation bases behind these requirements.

In this course, you get introduced to digital 3D modeling of infrastructure (Quadri, Novapoint, and AutoCad), where you will apply the theory to design a new road link in an existing network of transport infrastructure.

The subject will also cover how road and transport planners deal with natural hazards, operational and maintenance considerations, and universal design requirements of transport infrastructure.

Learning outcome

Students are expected to have knowledge of:

  • Objectives of, and needs for new/upgraded transport infrastructure.
  • Route selection and requirements for geometric design.
  • Road aesthetics and good integration with the surroundings.

Students should be able to:

  • Construct a new road section in a digital 3D model.
  • Lay out a road alignment in the terrain with good integration into the surroundings.
  • Design the road based on given boundary conditions.

General competence:

  • Apply knowledge of fundamental principles of road and transport planning.
  • Understand the construction process in road construction within the framework of laws and regulations, and the role of different stakeholders.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and project work. The lectures are given Norwegian.

Compulsory assignments

  • Mandatory exercises

Further on evaluation

Partial assessments are the basis for the grade in the course. The parts include a written digital exam under supervision (weighted 60%) and an assignment (weighted 40%). The result for each part is given a letter grade, and the final grade is calculated according to the given weighting.

At least 6 out of 8 exercises must be approved in order to access the evaluation..

If there is a re-sit examination in May/June or August, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. Students who register for a re-sit exam in May/June can not register for a re-sit exam in August. All parts of the assessment must be passed in order to get a passing grade for the whole course.
