About
About the course
Course content
In TEGN1101 students will get to know the world as seen from a Deaf perspective, and find out what educational opportunities and life possibilities deaf and deaf-blind people have had during different times. They will get to know how Norwegian Sign Language and cultural expressions are anchored in the history of deaf people and have affected the development of organizations of deaf people. Throughout history, majority society has had differing views of and perspectives on deaf people as a minority, and this can be seen from the rights of deaf people and various institutions involved in their lives. Important perspectives covered are the medical perspective and the modern technical/medical equipment it offers versus a linguistic and cultural perspective, with central concepts like a positive Deaf identity, Deafhood and Deaf Gain.
