Course content
TEGN1105 is based on TEGN1102 and introduces basic concepts in linguistics, focusing on signed languages. Students will get an overview of the phonology, morphology and syntax of signed languages, and we will discuss different sign types in the vocabularies of signed languages. Students will learn to identify and describe different traits of Norwegian Sign Language, using the correct linguistic terminology, by e.g. using different annotation tools on (video recorded) Norwegian Sign Language discourse. Students will continue to develop their abilities to read and write academic texts.
Learning outcome
Candidates
- know the basic concepts used in signed language linguistics
- have a basic knowledge of central aspects of the structure of Norwegian Sign Language
- can identify and describe different traits of signed languages using the correct linguistic terminology
- can use annotation tools
- can present their own analysis in a simple academic text
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, group discussions and class discussions, project including practical exercises in analysis and annotation.
Compulsory assignments:
80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)
1. An assignment including annotation and analysis, where the results are presented in 2. a written academic text.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Requires admission to the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language or the one-year program in Norwegian Sign Language.
