Course content
TEGN2002 gives a basic introduction to what a profession is, and the laws and ethical guidelinas governing the interpreting profession. In preparation for coming periods of practicum students will discuss professional confidentiality in detail, and they will sign an agreement about this. In TEGN2002 student will begin to reflect on the importance of getting to know oneself through meeting others. We begin to look at the historical development of the interpreting profession, its distinctiveness and place in society as well as the relationship between interpreters, employers of interpreters and the deaf community as this is seen through for example "hearing privilege" and "allyship". TEGN2002 also gives an introduction to interpreting theory and to which interpreting methods are used in different situations.
Learning outcome
Candidates
- have basic knowledge of what it means to be a professional
- have knowledge about and an understanding of interpreters' confidentiality and how the interpreter's work is linked to laws and ethical guide lines
- have knowledge about how the right to interpreting services is described in laws
- knows about the historical development of the interpreting profession, its distinctiveness and place in society
- knows how interpreting theory has emerged
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, discussions, written assignments.
Compulsory assignments:
80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)
1. Oral group assignment on ethics and professional confidentiality. 2. Oral group assignment regarding a case. 3. & 4. Two short written assignments as preparation for the home exam.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Norwegian Sign Language (LTBATGTOLK)
Norwegian Sign Language (LTTEGN)
Required previous knowledge
Completed the first year of the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language, the one-year program in Norwegian Sign Language or the equivalent from another educational institution in Norway.
Requires admission to the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language.
