Course content

TEGN2005 is based on and should be seen in connecttion with TEGN2001 and TEGN2003, and with TEGN2002 and TEGN2004.

In TEGN2005 students will start interpreting. A large proportion of the activities consist in working on students' basic interpreting skills, both during teaching hours and during practicum periods. Students are required to both discuss and practice interpreting in varying interpreting situations using different interpreting methods. During this early phase in the development of interpreting skills, focus is on interpreting monologues consecutively and the students will learn how to stop and clarify what was said in an appropriate manner. Students will begin to learn strategies to prepare interpreting assignments using for example discourse mapping. They will also begin to learn strategies to reflect on interpreting assignments they have conducted using relevant professional concepts.

Obligatory practicum: There are three separate weeks of obligatory practicum in TEGN2005. These are usually arranged on campus with hired actors and supervisors. Practicum is conducted with students divided into groups, with one interpreting supervisor and one actor per group. Feed back is given in the group. For all practicum periods students will receive feed back on their own skills. Practicum is graded: Pass or Fail. Deaf students can have alternative practicum periods if needed.
