TEGN2007 - Interpreting – professional and theoretical perspectives 3

Course content

TEGN2007 builds on TEGN2004. Here we will focus on the interpreter's professional practice and the interpreter's role space and different roles. An important theme is how the interpreter's role space has been affected by changes in society over time. We look at and reflect on how interpreting and interpreters influence communication situations, for example how participants in an interpreted situation can come to appraise each other based on the interpreter's linguistic repertoire, gender, age, dialect, ethnicity, knowledge and skills. We will also continue to study interpreting theory and descriptions of the interpreting process. A central aim for TEGN2007 is that the student develops the ability to reflect on their own professional development and understand the importance of contributing to the development of the profession.

Learning outcome

Candidates

- have a broad knowledge of the interpreter's professional practice, and about the interpreter's role space and different roles

- have knowledge about historical perspectives on the development of the interpreter's role space and different roles, and societal structures that affect these

- have a broad knowledge of interpreting theory and interpreting processes

- have knowledge about and can reflect on how interpreting and interpreters affect communication situations with basint this in their knowledge of professional ethics

- can use interpreting theory and knowledge about interpreting processes for their own professional development

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, group discussions, role play/practical exercises.
Compulsory assignments:
80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)
1. Oral presentation – preparation of an interpreting assignment. 2. & 3. Two written reflection texts based in case discussions. 4. An oral presentation.
Approved obligatory assignments are valid for 2 semesters (the semester in which the approval is given, plus the following semester). All obligatory assignments must be completed in the same semester.

Further on evaluation

Home examination in the form of an academic text that is based in the written compulsory assignments where the student should find a focus area and substantiate it with theory, discussion and reflection and possibly also examples from periods of practicum. All examination aids allowed.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Norwegian Sign Language (LTTEGN)

Required previous knowledge

Completed the second year of the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language – specialization interpreting.

Requires admission to the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language.
