TEGN2009 - Interpreting with Practicum 3

Course content

TEGN2009 builds on TEGN2002, TEGN2004, TEGN2007, TEGN2001, TEGN2003, TEGN2006, and is a continuation of TEGN2008.

Here students will continue to develop their interpreting skills both during teaching hours and during practicum periods, with the aim to reach beginner level for professional practice. Through discussions, interpreting exercises and interpreting during practicum periods, students will see the importance of cooperation between all participants in interpreting situations. Here, students will also analyze and reflect on the professional practice of themeselves and others in order to develop their skills.

Learning outcome

Candidates

- can prepare, conduct and reflect on an interpreting assignment

- can interpret in a realistic tempo into a rich and varied spoken Norwegian and into fluent and nuanced Norwegian Sign Language

- can act professionally in different interpreting situations and cooperate with primary participants and colleagues

- can analyse and reflect on the interpreting of themselves and others in order to develop their skills

Learning methods and activities

Language and interpreting exercises, group discussions, analysis of video recordings after exercises and interpreting, preparation of interpreting assignments, interpreting.

Compulsory assignments:

80% compulsory attendance. (Failure to comply with this can be compensated in accordance with instructions from the teacher.)

1. Written reflections from practicum periods, minimu 1 page per week. 2. Presentation of case from practicum period.

Obligatory practicum: There are two obligatory periods of practicum in TEGN2009, both at interpreter workplaces:

- two weeks practicum at a workplace that is usually not the same as the one the student was in during TEGN2008. The student must interpret in real interpreting assignments.

- three weeks practicum when the student usually returns to the same workplace as during TEGN2008. The student must interpret in real interpreting assignments.

For both periods the student will get feed back on their own skills. Practicum is graded: Pass or Fail. Deaf students can have alternative practicum periods if there is a need for this.

Further on evaluation

Group exam in interpreting with individual grades where the sudents interpret between spoken Norwegian and Norwegian Sign Language and between spoken Norwegian and Sign Supported Norwegian, followed by oral reflection. Students will receive preparation materials 7 days (1 week) before the examination starts. The examination lasts up to 4 hours per group. During the preparation phase all examination aids are allowed, furing the examination no examination aids are allowed. Deaf students can have alternative exams if there is need for it.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Norwegian Sign Language (LTTEGN)

Required previous knowledge

TEGN2008 and TEGN2004.

Requires admission to the BA-program in Norwegian Sign Language – specialization interpreting.
