Course content

In this course, you will learn that all types of electromagnetic energy conversion are based on electromagnetic induction. Electrical conductors are able to harvest energy when they experience a varying magnetic field via an induced voltage.

The main principles of electromechanical systems, in particular, and electromagnetic systems, in general, will be covered. There are many electromagnetic devices based on these principles. It includes classical electrical machines such as DC-machiens, synchronous machines and asynchronous machines used in generators and motors, as well as transformers. In addition, it would also include vibration energy harvesting devices, wireless chargers, wireless power transfer devices, hyperloop pods or other modern inventions. They are all, in principle, similar machines and/or devices.

Problems used in the course are intended to strengthen understanding of the phenomena and interactions in electromechanics and electromagnetic energy conversion and include examples from current research.

Learning outcome

After completing the course, the candidate will:

- know the electromagnetic laws used to calculate central quantities such as magnetomotive force, magnetic flux, reluctance, induced voltage, force and torque

- know how to apply magnetic circuits

- know how the various types of machines work

- know the mathematical models to calculate currents, torque, losses, parameter values, etc.

- have good knowledge about the main design principles

After completing the course, the candidate will be able to

- carry out simple design tasks (select machine for defined application)

- analyze electrical machines in relevant steady-state operational situations

- select instrumentation and carry out measurements on electrical machines under different (steady-state) operating conditions, both in laboratory and in field work

General competence:

After completing the course, the candidate has increased:

- skills in cooperation and interdisciplinary collaboration

- ability to communicate effectively to professionals and non-specialists alike through reports and presentations

- ability to contribute to innovation and innovative thinking
