Course content

1. Electric power systems: 3-phase systems and per phase diagram. Voltage drop, losses and compensation. Power transformer, equivalent diagram. Per unit dscription. Load flow analysis.
2. District heating based on hot water: General principles on design and dimensioning of pipe systems, optimisation of flow velocities and pumping system, expansion and safety systems.
3. Natural gas: resource overview, types and properties, energy chains from gas wells to the end-users, purification and processing, pipeline transportation, LNG technology, perspectives for gas utilisation in Norway.

Learning outcome

The main objective of this course is to give basic knowledge about transport of electric power, district heating and natural gas. The student will learn about the most important physical and technical characteristics of these energy carriers and about the basic methods for analysis of energy flow in networks.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures. Compulsory exercises, laboratory and project work. The projects include use of computer programs and cover about 50% of the time reserved for exercises, laboratory and home work. The projects must be submitted to gain admission to the final examination. Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes a final written exam (75%) and project work (25%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may change from written to oral.
