Course content

(I) Electrooptics: Waves in isotropic and anisotropic media, dispersion and absorption. Polarization, reflection, refraction, Jones formalism, optical activity, Faraday effect. Interference and coherence. Fourier optics and gaussian beams. (II) Lasers: Optical cavities. Amplifier media. Amplification saturation and hole burning. Pulsed lasers, Q switching, cavity dumping and mode locking.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The students are expected to acquire basic knowledge of the fundamental principles within photonics/electrooptics. They are expected to get deeper knowledge in electromagnetic optics, em waves in dielectric media, absorption and dispersion, polarisation, statistical optics, photon optics, resonator optics, laser amplifiers and lasers. In addition the students should be able to describe and explain selected components/devices and techniques, as well as describe how different lasers function.

Skills:
The student should be able to analyze and discuss relevant theoretical and experimental problems in photonics/electrooptics. The student should be able to describe problems in electrooptics, define boundary conditions and apply the laws of electromagnetics and optics.

General skills:
Work individually and solve theoretical exercises, in addition to performing and understanding lab exercises within photonics.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, tutorials, laboratory exercises and mid-term exam. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. The course may be held in English.
