Course content

First and Second law of thermodynamics. Equations of state, reversible and irreversible processes, entropy, thermodynamic potentials. Maxwell's velocity distribution, mean free path, heat conduction, diffusion. Boltzmann distribution.

Learning outcome

By a theoretical and experimental approach this course will give the student a basic understanding of how systems in thermal equilibrium can be described by thermodynamics. This means to understand how the first and second law of thermodynamics lead to the quantity entropy and give relations between quantities of thermodynamics. Further the principles of heat engines and refrigerators, mixtures, energy transport by heat conduction, and diffusion of particles in a medium will be given. The student will learn to analyse various types of problems within thermal physics by use of mathematical methods including the use of ICT-based/numerical methods through the use of Python.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and compulsory laboratory excercises and problem solving. Expected work load in the course is 225 hours.

Compulsory assignments

  • Calculation exercises
  • Laboratory exercises

Further on evaluation

The final grade is based on portfolio assessment. The portfolio includes written exam and report. The evaluation of the different parts is given in %-points, while the entire portfolio is given a letter grade. For a re-take of an examination, all assessments in the portfolio must be re-taken.

The re-sit examination (in August) may be changed from written to oral.
