Course content
The Course is based on self-studies and discussions of journal articles and text book material on selected ore- and mineral-deposits relevant for ongoing research efforts at the department of Geology and Geo-Engineering.
Learning outcome
Imagine that you are challenged to evaluate the potential for shear zone hosted precious metal deposits on the Fosen peninsula, or Cu-Ni deposits in the Seiland Igneous Province or something completely different.
Knowledge:
The student will be provided with knowledge on prospecting techniques, formation and appearance of selected economic mineral deposits.
Skills and general competence:
Learning strategies for developing and implementing an ore-geological project. How and where to gather basic geological data and how to write a sober report that communicates the required information for investors, clients and other decision makers that eventually may sponsor the project.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures/colloqia (by the students), self studies and discussion c. once a week. Lectures are held in English if required. Mandatory field work for a 7 days duration in a relevant area is an important part of the course, however, fieldwork may be substituted by lab-work if weather conditions prevents mapping and sampling out doors. Field work may be scheduled for a weekend. After fieldwork the the student is required to write a report comprising 5000 words that will count 50% of the final grade. Oral examination counts 50 % of final grade.

Further on evaluation
Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes an oral exam (50%) and a report (50%). The results for the parts are given in %-scores, while the entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade.
For a re-take of an examination, all assessments during the course must be re-taken.
Specific conditions
Limited admission to classes. For more information: https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/Admission+to+courses+with+restricted+admission
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is for students who aim at specialising in ore- and mineral-deposit geology and hard-rock geology.
Due to field-work logistics and limited capacity at certain labs., max. 12 students are accepted at the course. If the course is overbooked, priority is given to MSc students with relevant specialisation.
Required previous knowledge
TGB4115 Ore-Deposit Geology og TGB4130 Petrology or similar.
