Course content

The course is based on self-studies and discussions of journal articles and text book material on selected ore- and mineral-deposits relevant for ongoing research efforts at the department.

Learning outcome

Imagine that you are challenged to evaluate the potential for shear zone hosted precious metal deposits on the Fosen peninsula, or Cu-Ni deposits in the Seiland Igneous Province or something completely different.

Knowledge:
The student will be provided with knowledge on prospecting techniques, formation and appearance of selected economic mineral deposits.

Skills and general competence:
The student should know:
- Strategies for developing and implementing an ore-geological project.
- How and where to gather basic geological data and how to write a sober report that communicates the required information for investors, clients and other decision makers that eventually may sponsor the project.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures/colloquia (by the students), self-studies and discussion about once a week. Lectures are held in English if required. Mandatory fieldwork for a 7 days duration in a relevant area is an important part of the course, however, fieldwork may be substituted by lab-work if weather conditions prevents mapping and sampling outdoors. Fieldwork may be scheduled for a weekend. After fieldwork the students are required to write a report comprising 5000 words (group work) that will count 40 % of the final grade. Individual oral examination counts 60 % of final grade.

Compulsory assignments

Further on evaluation

In order to be eligible to receive a grade in the course, both assessments must receive a passing score. Students who have passed the course and would like to try to improve their grade will only re-take the final exam, not the fieldwork and group project.
