Course content

Transport and deposition of sediments. Sedimentary textures and structures. Depositional environments and facies. Stratigraphy and stratigraphical principles with emphasis on sequence stratigraphy. Practicals consist of the microscopy of sedimentary rocks, interpretation of sedimentary structures, description and interpretation of sedimentary facies in cores, interpretation of graphic sedimentary logs.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The student should have knowledge about:
- Origin and transport of sedimentary materials.
- Physical properties of sedimentary rocks.
- Composition, classification, and diagenesis of sedimentary rocks.
- Facies and depositional environments.
- Stratigraphical principles and methods.

Skills:
The student should be able to:
- Classify sedimentary rocks both from hand specimens and thin sections.
- Recognise and interpret sedimentary structures.
- Construct and interpret graphical sedimentology logs, both from cores and outcrop.
- Use lithostratigraphic and biostratigraphic data for correlation purposes.
- Perform simple sequence stratigraphic interpretations.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and practicals. 1 week mandatory field course. The field course report count 30% of the evaluation. The exam can be changed from written to oral at the postponed exams (continuation exam).
