About

About the course

Course content

The course is a further specialisation in Project Management and builds on courses in the first year of the International MSc in Project Management. The course provides the foundation for the Specialisation Project (TIØ5230) and Master Thesis (TIØ4920) and comprises (a) selected topics covering contemporary research on projects and their management and (b) a dedicated module on Master Thesis research skills.

Learning outcome

The course is restricted to students who have an IØT specialisation in their 3rd semester of the International MSc in Project Management (PROMAN) and 9th semester MTIØT students who chose Project Management as their main profile.

  • An overview of advanced themes within project management research. Topics to be covered in the course are selected to be relevant as the theoretical basis for the Specialisation Project and Master Thesis.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the key methodological challenges and choices relevant for successful completion of a master thesis in the field of project management.
  • Ability to handle literature reviews and apply critical thinking to analyse existing literature and develop own research.
  • Ability to discuss theoretical concepts and ideas in project management research literature.

Learning methods and activities

The course has two modules: (a) Seminar series covering selected research topics on projects and their management and (b) Master Thesis Research skills. Active participation is expected in both modules.

Further on evaluation

The course uses a portfolio evaluation. The portfolio consists of two reports: a group report counting towards 40% of the assessment and an individual report counting towards 60% of the assessment. The objective of both your group and individual reports is to help students develop critical analytical skills for reviewing research literature. Information about deadlines for the reports can be found in the course plan at the start of the semester. Guidance is formative feedback on group and individual assignments.

For a grade improvement, all assessments must be retaken.

Students taking this course must also take TIØ5230 Project Management, Specialization Project. The student must have a background that corresponds to at least three of the four obligatory courses (TIØ5200, TIØ5210, TBA5100 and TPK5200) of the Master of Science in Project Management.
