About

About the course

Course content

Timber as a structural material, mechanical properties (strength and stiffness), durability; unidirectional components (solid timber, glued-laminated timber, LVL). Typical structural systems for timber structures. Background and introduction to European design rules for timber structures, Eurocode 5. Basic design and verification of timber structures, design rules and tools. Details and joint design. Glulam and arch structures. Stability and bracing systems. Basic ultimate and seviceability state requirements.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The students shall have knowledge about:
- properties of wood and unidirectional wood-based materials for use in load-carrying structures
- load-carrying wooden structural systems
- design of timber structures
- background and basis of design rules

Skills:
The students shall be able to:
- evaluate and propose structural wood-based systems
- calculate load effects for statically determined structures
- verify that requirements to stiffness and strength are fulfilled with respect to European design rules (Eurocode 5)

General competence:
The students shall master:
- general basis of load and load calculations
- general static analysis and calculation of load effects
- general basis of structural design according to European rules
- evaluate timber as possible structural material

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and possible model building. A given number of calculating exercises must be approved for admittance to examination, see course information. The lectures, exercises and exam are given in English. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
