Course content

The course content is focused on materials properties and behavior with respect to mechanical design and engineering. The course takes both a general approach and a detailed approach where the first includes: Materials and theirs roles and importance in history and in modern society, materials and innovations, resources and availability, material cost, principles for systematic materials selection and principles for engineering design with respect to material properties. Detailed topics are: physical and mechanical properties including density, elastic properties, yielding and plastic properties, hardness and ductility. Relations between atomic structure, molecular structure, microstructure and material properties. Phase diagrams, heat treatment and strengthening mechanisms for important metals and alloys. Corrosion and degradation mechanisms. Important engineering materials will be emphasized: Carbon steels, steel alloys, light weight alloys, engineering polymers and fiber composites. Some selected processing and manufacturing methods are included.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate shall have a broad knowledge about the engineering materials including

  • the fundamental structure and properties of metals, ceramics, polymers and composites,
  • the relationships between structures and properties,
  • manufacturing, processing and fabrication of materials,
  • properties and performance of materials in different environments,
  • the principles for rational and knowledge based selection of materials.

Skills: The candidate shall be able to

  • do materials selection for specific applications,
  • describe microstructures and corresponding properties for selected materials,
  • solve basic engineering problems related to materials selection and components

General competence: The candidate shall be able to

  • communicate the aspects of materials and material technology related to mechanical engineering,
  • recognize the needs for specific material competence in different engineering projects and
  • be able to make sound estimates and judgments about the feasibility of engineering solutions involving materials and material selection.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, demonstrations, exercises and laboratory work. The exercises shall be reported individually while laboratory work shall be reported by groups.
