Advanced Analysis of Marine Structures
About
About the course
Course content
The subject is lectured in two parallel lecture series on static and dynamic analysis, respectively.
Static analysis: Basic theory and finite element formulations for plates and shells; modelling of marine structures; introduction to analysis of nonlinear geometrical and material behaviour; overview of error sources due to dicretization and numerical operations; quality control of the analysis.
Dynamic analysis: Energy principles; dAlemberts principle; formulation of equilibrium in the finite element method; undamped free vibration; eigenvalue analysis; reduction of degrees of freedom; analysis of forced response in time- and frequency domain; damping models; selected topics of dynamic analysis of marine structures.
Learning outcome
Extend the basis for finite element analysis of nonlinear and dynamic response of marine structures.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and exercises. Selected exercises may be mandatory. Matlab and finite element software will be applied for code development and practical analysis of marine structures. Repeated or delayed exam may be in the form of an oral examination instead of the written examination. Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
Compulsory assignments
