Course content

The main focus of this course is to provide knowledge about the company as a production and operation system. More concretely, it is taught about the central functions and processes in manufacturing enterprises as seen from both a strategically and operational perspective. Theories, analytical methods and techniques are examined for the following areas: Production strategy and processes, production system, production planning and control (control model), production layout planning, information systems, logistics and supply chain management (including material flow, stock management, purchase and distribution), performance improvement and quality management, reliability, maintenance, safety and vulnerability.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
- Basic knowledge about the production and operational system of modern manufacturing enterprises.
- Understanding and use of relevant models, analytical methods and techniques.
- Insight into what constitute core technologies within the respective processes.
- Fundamental understanding of report-writing.

Skills:
- Ability to apply acquired knowledge for developing holistic solutions within production and operational management.
- Ability to transform theories into practical application based on well-founded choices of relevant alternative solutions.
- Critically and independently evaluate analytical tools, methods, technical models and solutions.

General competence (attitudes):
- Understand the role of the production engineer in a broader societal perspective.
- Cooperate and contribute to multidisciplinary interaction.
- Communicate technical production problems and solutions.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises and project work carried out in groups. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
