About the course

Course content

- Project initiation seen in relation to the organizational context: strategy, goal and objectives.
- Models for project organizing, pitfalls and conditions for success, the role of the project manager.
- Tools and techniques for planning, including identification of project scope, work breakdown structure, resource planning, estimates, budgeting, and scheduling.
- Through introduction to the principles of project risk management
- Through introduction to the principles of project evaluation and earned value method.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: Basic understanding to the project working model. Comprehensive understanding to challenges and corresponding success factors for project execution. A thorough understanding of the tools, methods, and processes for project planning and control.

Skills: Develop skills in applying the methods and tools for project planning. Ability to analyses and evaluate project status based on progress information.

General competencies: Ability to cooperate and contribute to multidisciplinary interaction.

Learning methods and activities

Combination of lectures, in-class- assignments, hand-in exercises, group based assignments and student presentations. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. Instructions are given in English and the Examination papers will be given in English only. Students are free to choose Norwegian or English for written assessments.
