Course content

Global trade patterns.

Ship Types, trades and ports (dry cargo, tankers, specialist, container and Ro-Ro).

Policy and regulatory impact on global trade and economy in shipping.

The relationship between international trade and shipping

Different types of shipping companies

The roles of various stakeholders in shipping as shipping associations, shipowners, charterers, insurers, intermediaries (Port / Liner / chartering agents and brokers), sailors, workers and trade unions.

Charter market and price mechanism in maritime transport

The company finances and financing of ships

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

identify the most important factors that influence the need for sea transport

explain the importance of international trade on global development

describe how the shipping industry constantly adapting changing conditions

use scientific methods and practices for the development of written reports

independently update his/her knowledge in the field, both through literature searches, consult experts and by auditing own practice

 

Skills:

identify and describe the global trading patterns and why they have occurred

demonstrate that he/she understands the relationship between ship types, trades and ports

describe the different types of companies that serve the shipping industry

show that he/she has general knowledge about the mechanism in the charter market and pricing in maritime transport

explain the key elements of the company's finances and shipfinancing

show that he/she is mastering the discipline courses through written reports and oral presentations

ability to assess the environmental, ethical and economic implications of shippingtrades in both local and global perspective and carry out that knowledge through his/her future career

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises.  

The teacher defines the content, scope, timeframe and submission of group work, but there will be an oral presentation of the group work of up to 10 minutes, and the report should be submitted by a specified date.

Portfolio (40%)

Students will prepare two group works collected in a portfolio. Group work is included in the assessment, and the participants in each group have the same character. Both parts must be passed.Resit exam:
It is possible to take a new 3 hours written exam.If a group has not received a passing grade in one or more papers in the portfolio, the group, under the assumption that all group members agree, get to submit a portfolio with improved work at the new exam. If the student waits until the next annual examination, a new case must be solved.Students are entitled to re-sit only the part of the examination in which they have had legitimate reasons for an absence or have failed.
