Course content

This course gives basic introduction to sound description and signal analyses, hearing mechanism (audiology), sound perception and music psychology. Sound examples and listening exercises.

Learning outcome

This course forms the basic understanding of music as a signal and as a sound stimulus, understanding of the hearing mechanism and hearing function in addition to music perception and memory.

Knowledge:
The purpose is to make the student capable of
- Understand the construction of music as an acoustical signal
- Understand, analyze and describe music signal in the time and frequency domain
- Understand the physiology and function of the hearing mechanism
- Understand brain physiology concerning sound processing, experience and memory.

Skills:
This will give the student reasonable background to
- Analyze and describe music as an acoustical/electrical signal
- Describe links between sound stimulus and sound experience
- Produce music formed to fill certain demands and constraints.

General competence:
The goal is to achieve
- Understanding of music as an audio signal
- Understanding of simple measuring methods and signal processing
- Understanding of hearing as the primary sense for music experience.
