Course content
The general topic is control and signaling in Internet. The course consists of two parts, one with focus on control of a single network device through programming (micro level), and one with focus on Internet as a system, in particular the interdomain components (macro level). The micro level part will concentrate on realizing different control functions through the concept Software Defined Networking (SDN). Topics that may be be part of the macro level are: Business models, Interchange agreements, BGP, BGP as an information carrier, and routing.
Learning outcome
A. Knowledge:
- To get a profound understanding of concepts and principles behind the Internet as a system
- To get a basic understanding of interdomain routing protocol BGP
- To get a basic understanding of how BGP is used as a signaling/ information distributor
- To get a basic understanding of routing services
- To get a basic understanding of Software Defined Networking (SDN)
-To get a basic understanding in programming in a network context
B. Skills:
- To be able to communicate, reason and creatively think about the ecosystem providing basic communication services in Internet
- To be able to design, implement, code, and debug a simple network control program
-To use network emulation tools
Learning methods and activities
The teaching method will consist of a blend of
lectures, exercises and multiple compulsory practical assignment.
Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade in the course. The portfolio includes up to 6 deliveries which together count 30% and a written final exam which counts 70%. The results for the parts are given in %-scores. The entire portfolio is assigned a letter grade.
If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.
One must complete a mandatory project and have a passing score in the deliveries to the portfolio evaluation in order to qualify for the final exam.
