Course content
The course builds on basic acoustics courses for applications in room and electroacoustics. It provides a fundament for understanding how sound is perceived in rooms, and to understand the principles between various sound reproduction systems. Through laboratory exercises the students should achieve a practical knowledge of acoustical measurements in room and electroacoustics.
Topics covered include: propagation, radiation, scattering and absorption of sound in room and electroacoustics. Directional hearing and the foundation for perceptually based compression of audio signals, transducers and techniques for sound recording and sound reproduction, electrical analogy circuits for mechanical and acoustical systems, acoustical measurement techniques.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
To get a broad understanding of:
- The sound fields in rooms.
- Electroacoustical transducers.
- Measurement techniques in room acoustics.
- The perception of sound in rooms.
Skills:
To be able to:
- Predict, measure, and analyze sound fields in rooms.
- Analyze electroacoustical tranducers and do basic design of loudspeakers.
- Analyze how a sound field in a room will be perceived by a listener.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, classroom exercises, obligatory laboratory exercises. The laboratory exercises account for 25% of the grade and the final exam accounts for 75% of the grade. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral. The course may be held in English.
Compulsory assignments
- Laboratory exercises
