Course content

An introduction to Space Technology and Space oriented activities will be presented. Mechanics in Space. Weightlessness and microgravity research. The atmosphere. Rocket technology. Satellites. Observational satellites, environmental observations. Communication and communication systems. Man in Space. The course will run once a week in the autumn term, starting in August. This course gives the basic knowledge for taking TTT4235 Space Technology II in the spring semester.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidate has

  • broad and multidiciplinary knowledge in space technology
  • indepth knowledge on satellite orbits, satellite platform technology, and link budgets
  • good knowledge on the space environment and the effects of microgravity
  • good knowledge on space applications such as earth observation, navigation and communication

Skills: The candidate can

  • describe the characteristics of the different orbit types (LEO, MEO, GEO, HEO)
  • describe at least three main areas of application for satellites (earth observation, navigation and communication)
  • set up a link budget - describe the main components of a satellite (payload, rocket engine, propellant, antennas, solar cells and mechanical structure)
  • describe the effects of microgravity and radiation on organic and non organic materials.

General competence: The candidate can understand suitable satellite missions, the pros and cons of operating in the space environment, and which tasks an engineer has to accomplish in order to secure a successful launch and operation of a satellite in orbit.

TTT4235 Space Technology II is a follow-on course from this course. TTT4235 contains a campaign at Andøya Space. Maximum 24 students may participate in this campaign due to restrictions at Andøya Space.

Learning methods and activities

The course will be given every week.

Further on evaluation

If there is a re-sit examination in August, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Course materials

The recommended textbook is The International Handbook of Space Technology - that can be downloaded for free when on the NTNU network http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-3-642-41101-4. Notes and handouts will be made available.
