About the course

Course content

The bachelor's thesis is the largest independent assignment in the social education program. The subject provides an in-depth course in social science methodology. Central to the subject is training in systematic work, gathering research-based knowledge, and the academic writing process in the various parts of the assignment, as well as professional ethics and research ethics. Through the bachelor's process, the student will document professional insight, breadth of knowledge, and independence in a self-chosen subject related to social education.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing and passing VET2900, the student will:

  • have knowledge on research methods and principles, and concepts for assessing scientific quality
  • have broad and up-to-date knowledge on research and development work within the subject area of the bachelor's thesis in social education
  • have knowledge of relevant professional databases and tools for systematic searching in relevant professional databases.

Skills

After completing and passing VET2900, the student will:

  • be able to plan, conduct, and complete a written assignment with the scientific rigor appropriate to bachelor's level
  • be able to perform literature searches in a systematic manner and in relevant professional databases, and document this process
  • be able to find, assess, and reference knowledge, relevant results from research and development work, and scientific methods as a basis for illuminating practical and theoretical issues and making justified decisions

General competence

After completing and passing VET2900, the student will:

  • be able to communicate knowledge about and reflect on the core foundations of the field, practical professional practice, and its societal mission
  • be able to plan and carry out a bachelor's thesis that extends over time, both independently and as a participant in supervision
  • be able to assess knowledge and scientific work, and apply up-to-date scientific literature, as well as other relevant knowledge

Learning methods and activities

There is continuous teaching throughout the entire semester.

Students should delve into a relevant topic in the social education program. The bachelor's thesis in social education is recommended to be written in pairs, but it is also possible to write it individually. The method used is a literature study. Students choose their own topic and research question within a relevant social education subject. Guidance is provided in groups and pairs/individually. It is noted that changes in teaching methods and activities may occur.

Obligatory work requirement: The student will deliver a written exercise which describes an issue relevant to social education, documents a literature search, and summarizes findings from two relevant studies from the search.

The bachelor's thesis in social education is recommended to be written in pairs, but it is also possible to write it individually.

If the exam is retaken, a significantly revised version of the bachelor's thesis must be submitted. Changes in the assessment scheme may occur.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Social Education (HSGVEB)

Required previous knowledge

The subject has study rights requirements, meaning that the subject is reserved for students admitted to the bachelor's program in social education at NTNU in Trondheim (HSGVEB).

EXPH0400 Examen philosophicum for Medicine- and Health Sciences must be passed.

( This applies to the class of 2025 and onwards).
