Course content

How can one understand counselling as a dicipline in a historical perspective with relevance to our own actual and future society? Counselling happens all the time between human beings and we have all, at least informally, experiences being either counsellor or client. How should we understand the need for such services in light of concepts such as mentoring, coaching and guidance? Relational thinking and person-oriented theories, theories of facilitation, experiential learning, development, and communication will be central in illustrating how power and trust are promoted or blocked within human relations and in teams or groups. Counselling in a relational perspective involves perspectives on both individuals and groups. There will be space for both practical experimenting in smaller groups with examples from individual as well as group perspectives and with reflections related to one's own learning processes and development. Methodological strategies of facilitating others' learning, development and growth will also be emphasised.

Through the course the student will acquire basic knowledge, skills and understanding of theoretical and practical perspectives in counselling. Iin addition the student will develop understanding and increased awareness of their own growth and developmental processes based on critical and constructive connections between selected theories, practical exercises and the practice of counselling.
