Course content

The course integrates vocational breadth and depth and professional subjects, with emphasis on professional and vocational breadth. The course focuses on developing the vocational teacher identity by establishing knowledge, skills and general competence in educational planning, pupils' learning processes and governance documents. The students are able to reflect on collective attitudes and values in an interdisciplinary professional collaborative environment. Basic skills that are relevant for the individual fields of study are emphasized in the course, especially in the field of writing skills and digital competence. There will also be given training in the necessary direction-specific subjects that are assessed within the different fields of study. Professional and vocational practice will be integrated through work requirements in the course to develop vocational teacher competence.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

The student:

  • has knowledge of different learning strategies based on the pupils/apprentices' prerequisites for learning and their right to differentiated teaching
  • has knowledge of learning and working methods/tools, digital tools and processes relevant to the professional and vocational practice
  • has knowledge of the development of learning environments
  • has knowledge of pupils/ apprentices' self-efficacy and motivation for learning
  • has knowledge of different vocational and educational choices
  • has knowledge of relevant vocational theory
  • has knowledge of how one's own vocational background can be used in a teaching context
  • has knowledge of current curriculums, governing documents and legislation

Skills

The student:

  • can plan, justify, assess and lead educational training and use different forms of approaches in the training
  • can map the pupils' interests and learning needs
  • can facilitate an inclusive and meaningful learning environment that promotes the motivation of the pupils/apprentices
  • can lead, communicate and collaborate with pupils/apprentices individually and in groups
  • can find, use, refer to and assess the quality of information and subject matter and master written referencing
  • is able to apply his/her own vocational background in a teaching context
  • can analyze and apply current curricula, governing documents and legislation

General competence

The student:

  • can act professionally, and can reflect on the pupil’s/apprentices role, and their own role as a teacher
  • is able to reflect on their own practice and development in the face of the pupils/apprentices' prerequisites, interests and needs
  • can build relationships and collaborate with colleagues on relevant learning strategies
  • can plan, justify and lead interest-differentiated training for pupils in grades 8-13
  • has acquired the necessary professional digital competence
  • can reflect on professional and ethical challenges

Learning methods and activities

The course includes teaching, excursions and other learning activities at gatherings, and digital learning activities between the sessions. There are mandatory work requirements in the course and self-work and group work are scheduled between the sessions. Guidance is offered in connection with and between the gatherings.

Obligatory activities

80% compulsory attendance at the gatherings and predefined learning activities between the sessions.

3-4 work requirements. The assignments are assessed as approved/not approved. All coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the exam.

Further on evaluation

Oral group exam with duration 30/60 min. Presentation of answers to a task given two weeks before.

The exam is assessed as pass/fail.

Vocational Teacher Education (BYRK)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the vocational teacher education - bachelor's programme.
