Welcome to Ålesund!

It is located in the northern part of Western Norway’s fjord landscape, surrounded by the majestic Sunnmøre Alps.
NTNU in Ålesund has its own student building on campus, where you can stay dry from your apartment all the way to your classes in the lab, passing through the gaming zone and innovation hub along the way. It is a vibrant building where some of the best memories of your student years can be made. You can live in student accommodation with some of the city’s finest views and coolest rooftop terraces. Just one elevator ride away, you’ll find refreshing workouts at the fitness centre and exciting events in the concert venue.
With its 3000 students, the student community in Ålesund is tight-knit and welcoming. There are various organisations and activity groups that students engage in. The student organisations are based on volunteering and provides valuable experience in management, event planning, and marketing. Ålesund Studentsamfunn (ÅSS) organises events for students and offers a wide range of interest groups and activity groups that you can join.
Student organisation
In the buddy week you will be welcomed by the student organisation Archimedes.
Throughout the academic year you will be invited to social and professional events such as cabin trips, climbing, hikes, skiing trips, quiz and professional days. All members of the student organisation have access to Archimedes´ sailboat located not far from campus. Archimedes is also the student organisation of other study programmes at NTNU in Ålesund, so you get to know students outside the study programme that you’re enrolled to.
Learning environment
As a student on Mechatronics and Automation you will have lectures, project work and practical training in laboratories as teaching methods. You work closely with your fellow students in teams.
You get close contact with lecturers and the academic environment, and the master's programme is closely linked to the region's relevant idustries. The master's programme collaborates with local businesses, ensuring that you get both theoretical and practical competence.
Laboratories
You get access to laboratory facilities and workrooms such as prototypelab, MANULAB, energylab, ocean lab, Mechatronics Lab and more.
In the laboratories you will learn both how individual subsystems and modules function independently and how they can be integrated. This inlcudes elements such as sensors, actuators, electronics, mechanical systems and structures, design, intelligent control, programming, testing and documentation.
You will also get your own work space in laboratories and office buildings.
