About the programme

The PhD programme in Historical and Cultural Studies

About the programme

In order to solve the challenges the world faces and to create a sustainable society, we require knowledge about how culture and history shape our understanding and our choices. Through the PhD-programme in Historical and Cultural Studies, you can immerse yourself in humanistic disciplines such as Archaeology, Philosophy, Cultural Studies, History, European Studies, and Religious Studies. The doctoral projects in the programme have a wide scholarly and thematic breadth and include both individual projects and projects that are part of larger interdisciplinary ventures.

The PhD-programme is estimated to three years of full-time studies and must result in a scientific thesis. The work on the dissertation is standardized to 2,5 years full-time. In addition, there is a coursework component of 30 credits which include training in academic and research ethics, the philosophy of science, and methodology.

We can summarize the PhD-programme in Historical and Cultural Studies with the following three areas:

  • An independent research project that will result in a scientific thesis of a high international standard
  • Training in the theories of science, theory and methodology that provides scholarly breadth and insight
  • Acquisition of the ability to put one's own subject into a larger framework through professional reflection and practice
