Course content

Basic rock blasting technique. Surface and underground blasting. bench blasting, rock caverns, tunnels and shafts. Methods and equipment. Capacities, time and cost estimating. HES topics. Landscaping.

Learning outcome

The topic shall provide basic knowledge about rock blasting technique, tunnel excavation and surface rock excavation.

Knowledge:
Rock mass drillability and blastability
Excavation methods for tunnels in rock
Rock blasting technique in tunnels and quarries/open pit mines
Time and cost estimating fro construction works
HSE in rock blasting.

Skills:
Evaluate and quantify rock mass drillability and blastability
Evaluate excavation methods for tunnels based on time and cost estimates.
Design blasts in tunnels and quarries/open pits mines.
Design the machine fleet of tunnelling and rock quarrying.

General competence:
Understand the relations between the rock mass properties, excavation methods, time consumption, costs, quality and HES.
Understanding of possible utilisation of underground space for various purposes.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. Use of video. Possible excursion. Evaluation based 100% on exercises (50% individual and 50% in groups).
