Course content

Geometry of the reference ellipsoid, geoid modelling, datum, conform projection of the ellipsoid, satellite geodesy (GPS/GNSS), system description and measuring techniques. Transformation of satellite vectors to a map projection. Estimation of coordinates and heights. Analyses of observations and networks.

Learning outcome

Knowledge
The candidate should have knowledge of:
- Central coordinate and height reference systems which are in use globally and the geometry of their reference ellipsoids
- The general conformal map projection of the ellipsoid
- The system specification, observation techniques and central sources of error by using GNSS (GPS).
- Transformation of a GNSS satellite baseline (vector) to observations in the map projection plane
- Estimation of coordinates and heights, and also reliability analysis of observations and a network of control points.

Skills
The candidate is able to:
- Be acquainted with various global reference systems of coordinates and heights
- Carry out calculations on the ellipsoid by using the two geodetic main tasks
- Calculate coordinates in the map projection plane from GNSS observations
- Carry out and understand a reliability test as described in the Norwegian Geodata standard issued by the Norwegian Mapping Authority
- Be acquainted with multipath, ionospheric and tropospheric noise on GNSS signals, and also with methods to avoid that such sources of noise are corrupting the results.

General competence
The candidate can:
- Understand the theoretical basis for calculations on the ellipsoid and in the map projection plane of the ellipsoid, calculations and reliability analysis of coordinates and heights, and also a more advanced understanding of satellite geodesy (GNSS)
- Understand and use professional terminology within the discipline
- Work independently and in team and take the necessary initiatives
- Identify common fields between this discipline and other professional disciplines and be open for inter disciplinary approach and cooperation.

Learning methods and activities

Lechures. Computations and laboratory excersises. A subset of the assignments counts 30% of the final grade. The lectures and assignments are in English when students who do not understand Norwegian take the course. If there is a re-sit examination, the examination form may be changed from written to oral.

Compulsory assignments

  • Exerecises

Course materials

Hofmann-Wellenhof: GPS. Theory and Practice. Compendia published at the department.
