Course content

Introduction to conventional and Renewable energy sources environmental impacts, challenges and future trends, fundamentals, potential, estimation and, applications: • Solar Energy • Wind Energy • Hydropower • Biomass • Geothermal Energy • Ocean Energy

Learning outcome

The main purpose of this course is to introduce students with renewable energy resources availability, potential and suitability as a substitute for conventional energy resources in future energy demand. Having completed the courses, the student should have Knowledge: • Advanced knowledge about different renewable energy resources. • Advanced knowledge about potential of using renewable energy technologies as a complement to and to the extent possible, replacement for conventional technologies, and possibilities to combining renewable and non-renewable energy technologies in hybrid systems. • Knowledge about strategies for enhancing the use of renewable energy resources for future demand. Skills: • Analysis on importance of renewable energy solutions for sustainable development. • Able to identify sustainable energy solutions for sustainable development. • Able to carry out techno-economic assessment. General competence: • Develop competency in identifying renewable energy resources availability and utilization. • Develop competency in rating different renewable energy technologies. • Students demonstrate competency in renewable systems analysis, independently.

Learning methods and activities

The course includes lectures, exercises, assignments and project work. The course can be given as a guided self-study if less than 6 students are registered. In order to complete the coursework requirements 50 % of hand-ins must be approved. Teaching, tutoring, assignments and exam are given in English.

The final grade is based on written exam (counts 70%) and project assignment (counts 30%) both must be passed. Ordinary written exam can be changed to oral exam, if less than 6 students are registered. Ordinary re-sit for the written exam (next August). Ordinary re-sit for the written exam can be changed to oral exam. For project - new deadline for submission of project assignment.
