H2 Bio-Oil Pilot Plant

The set-up is customized setup for bench-scale or small pilot process tests in continuous operation with solid feeds. It is possible to combine or separate tests for pyrolysis, fast pyrolysis, hydropyrolysis, hydrogenation, hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of crude product (bio-oil), catalyst upgrading of pyrolysis products. The setup is constructed mainly with solid feeding components, reactors in series, condensers and on-line instruments for monitoring.

Two consecutive fixed-bed reactors are connected in series configuration, mainly for small scale tests. The setup is constructed with purpose for fast screening catalyst, tailoring catalyst performance and providing preliminary process information for larger scale or continuous operation of pyrolysis and upgrading reactions in coupled sequence. For example, non-catalytic hydropyrolysis can conducted in the first reactor and ex-situ catalytic up-gradation then can be carried out in the second reactor. Or the setup can be configured for hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of simulated bio-oil or liquid product from pyrolysis. The fast pyrolysis and fast pyrolysis with catalytic upgrading of volatiles processes on a fixed bed reactor yields product mix: gas, liquid and solid, and the compounds of liquid and gas phase

Pyrolyzer-Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC/MS)

The Py-GC/MS is customized instrument, constituting mainly a Micro-Pyrolyzer (EGA/PY-3030, Frontier Laboratories), a gas chromatographer (Agilent 7820A) (GC) and a mass spectrometer (5977E) (MS).

The Py-GC/MS is particularly valuable for screening reaction conditions and catalysts and fast qualitatively analyzing complicated compositions of gas and liquid products from catalyst or non-catalyst pyrolysis of lignin. With small quantities consumed per analysis, the technique provides an easy and efficient solution to analyze various large molecules with high boiling points.
