Agnes Beenfeldt Petersen
About
The polysaccharides alginates are found in seaweed and some soil bacteria. Alginates are industrially important because of their gelling and emulsifying properties. For example, alginate is used as a thickening agent in food and for biomaterials for medicinal use. My PhD is about alginate-modifying enzymes, which are enzymes we can use to optimise alginate, so that it gets the chain-length and composition, that we want. My main goal is to characterise how alginate lyases and epimerases work by better understanding their structure-function relationship. I work with enzymology and NMR spectroscopy, and with many different methods in general. My project is in collaboration with SINTEF Industry, DTU (Denmark), and Station Biologique de Roscoff (France).
I have a master’s in applied chemistry from DTU (Denmark), where I worked with biochemistry and organic and analytical chemistry. My master thesis was about the enzyme BeKdgF, which contributes to the degradation of alginate.
