Ashkan Jahanbani Ghahfarokhi

About

I am associate professor in reservoir engineering at Department of Geosciences (IGV), NTNU since January 2019. In 2022, I was selected as one of NTNU’s young talents in Outstanding Academic Fellows Programme 4.0 (2022-2026). My research group (including PhD, Postdoc, and master students) perform cutting edge research on numerical and data-driven subsurface reservoir modeling.

I have had the following managerial roles at NTNU:

2022: Project manager in NORHED II: Education and Research within Energy at two Mozambican universities
2021-2022: Head of the Reservoir Engineering and Petrophysics Group (now Well and Reservoir)
2020-2024: Leader of the CEORS Gemini Centre (strategic collaboration between NTNU and SINTEF on CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery & Storage)
2019-2022: Study profile manager in Engineering & ICT study program committee (an advisory board for the study program manager)
2017-present: Chairperson, Young Professionals Chairperson, and Faculty advisor at Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Trondheim section.

After PhD, I worked (2015-2017) at DNVA (Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, supported by Equinor) as recipient of a prestigious post-doctoral research scholarship on polymer gel simulation study. It is this academy that awards the Abel prize in mathematics.

I did another postdoc at PoreLab SFF (Norwegian Center of Excellence) on wettability alteration in low-salinity water flooding.

Research

I am specialized in subsurface reservoir modeling, enhanced recovery and fluid flow in porous media, and my current research includes:

CO2 injection for enhanced recovery and subsurface storage
Data-driven reservoir modeling
Production optimization

Well test analysis (PTA/RTA)
PVT, fluid model development
