Basanta Raj Pokhrel
About
Basanta Raj Pokhrel is a Senior Researcher at the Department of Electric Energy and is associated with National Smart Grid Laboratory. He has a PhD in Energy Technology from Aalborg University, Denmark and a master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering from Kathmandu University, Nepal / NTNU Norway.
His main research interests include power system operation and analysis, real time monitoring and control of the electricity grid, smart grids, WAMS / WAMPAC, and power system flexibility, with more than fiften years of experience. He is active in research project formulation, execution, project management, and operation of the National Research Laboratory.
Work Experience:
2021 - Present: Senior Researcher, Department of Electric Energy, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU).
2013 – 2021: Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Kathmandu University.
2010 – 2013: Lecturer, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Kathmandu University.
2006 – 2008: Plant Engineer, Bottlers Nepal Limited (Coca-Cola Nepal).
Research
My reseach activity is focused on Smart Grid Operation, specially in wide area monitoring system (WAMS).
CINELDI
CINELDI_FME is a centre for environment-friendly energy research.
SysOpt
This project aim to optimize the interface between power producers and grid owner by developing more efficient system services, thus ensuring operational security of the future energy system.
NEWEPS (Nordic Early Warning and Early Protection System)
The project will improve the monitoring of the Nordic power system and facilitate an automatic response to ensure stable and safe operation.
Hydro-Himalaya
Hydro-Himalaya is a NORHED-II funded project which aims to strengthen research-based education and produce a better qualified workforce for the Hindu Kush Himalaya.
EnergizeNepal Program (ENEP)
The Project is funded by The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Through the Royal Norwegian Embasy (RNE) and is managed by Kathmandu University (KU), Nepal, In Partnership with Hydrolab Nepal, NTNU, Norway and SINTEF, Norway.
ZeroKyst
The project will develop and demonstrate a complete solution for a flexible supply of electricity and green hydrogen as maritime fuel.
DIGI WIND
DigiWind is a pioneering EU-co-funded project, within the Digital Europe Programme (DEP), that aims to support Europe’s digital and green transformation.
