About
Erica Löfström works with Radical Innovation for Sustainable Futures and specializes in eco-visualization, provotyping (provocative prototyping), and the design of new solutions as part of participatory processes. Her background in the cutting field between Computer Science, Science- and Technology Studies (STS), has allowed her to develop a new direction in environmental communication that involves Disruptive Communication and Eco-Visualization. In this new direction, art and design/interfaces are important ingredients. During the last few years, she has developed new co-design methodologies in addition to using existing ones. This is to meet the need for radical innovation and to achieve systemic changes to enable the transition to a low-carbon society. She continually carries out explorative research projects which actively involve end-users and other stakeholders by means of prototyping and provotyping as part of a method called vision workshops.
Research
I specialize in eco-visualization, provotyping (provocative prototyping), and the design of new solutions as part of participatory processes. We need to achieve significant systemic changes to enable the transition to a low-carbon society. As a researcher, I saw the need for developing new co-design methodologies as a lot of research - including participatory ones - still focuses on trying to make individuals change their choices within the limits set by current solutions instead of focusing on challenging and changing the systems that surround us. This is why I work with Radical Innovation for Sustainable Futures and involve different stakeholders to co-design new sustainable solutions on a systemic level. I use disruptive environmental communication, eco visualization, and prototyping and provotyping as part of a method called vision workshops which was developed in order to harvest engagement and help stakeholders visioning radically different solutions that enable us, as a society, to live low-emission lives. We, humans, need to reconnect to the ecosystem and realize that we too are nature.
Nature In Your Face (NIYF)
NIYF develops a methodology to stimulate transformative societal change with citizens and other stakeholders. Four cases within four different domains demonstrate the applicability of our methodological approach. CO2 emission effects are quantified.
INCITE-DEM – Inclusive Citizenship in a world in Transformation: Co-Designing for Democracy
INCITE-DEM's experienced Consortium aims to enhance inclusive participation and civic engagement while expanding democratic innovation and dynamic feedback mechanisms between citizens and institutional actors in representative democracies.
CLEANcultures – An approach for innovative Climate Learning, Evaluation and Action in Neighbourhoods
We use cases in different countries and contexts to explore how new perspectives and solutions for existing local climate-relevant problems can be developed via novel learning and exchange processes.

Teaching experience
I have teaching experience in product design, interaction design, Computer Science (CS), Science- and Technology Studies (STS), Environmental Communication, Experts- in Teams courses, and in Eco-visualization, co-design- and workshop methods. In addition to my previous teaching and tutoring experience, I have taken a qualification course for teaching as part of my PhD in Sweden, and I have also studied pedagogy specifically. I also have experience with student-active teaching strategies and digital teaching.
