Formal position and Responsibilities
Gabriele Lobaccaro is Associate Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering at NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology. His research focus is on urban planning strategies, energy and building technology, façade engineering and sustainable architecture. He is a member of Smart Sustainable Cities@NTNU since 2013 and he has long experience in research activities related to Smart Cities projects developing technical solutions and environmental strategies for urban planning and sustainable architecture. He taught in the course of Building Physics for Architects (Bachelor) and Climate and Built Forms (Master in Sustainable Architecture). At the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering he teaches at the course of Building Physics, Basic Course.
Field of competence
His research activities are mainly focused on sustainable and smart strategies for cities and neighborhoods, aiming to develop architecture and urban design solutions for smart, energy-efficient, climate-resilience cities. He experienced in several national (REINVENT - REsponsive, INtegrated , VENTilated - REINVENT - windows), European (EU FP7-funded RAMSES Climate change adaptation, mitigation and sustainable development in cities, CoSSMic Collaborating Smart Solar-powered Micro-grids”) and international projects (e.g. Chinese partners: SEniC, SiNoPSE, iSTAR) and networks (EERA Joint Programme Smart Cities, IEA SHC Task 41 “Solar Energy in Architecture” and Task 51 “Solar Energy in Urban planning”). He was co-leader of the Subtask C «Case studies and action research» within the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme International Energy Agency Task 51 «Solar Energy in Urban Planning». He is now member of the IEA SHC Task 63 "Solar Neighborhood Planning" and the COST Action PEARL PV (CA16235) focused on “Performance and Reliability of Photovoltaic Systems: Evaluations of Large-Scale Monitoring Data”
Background
Gabriele is an architectural engineer working on urban planning strategies, energy building and architectural design decisions support using dynamic simulation tools and conducting environmental climate analyses. He graduated in 2008 in MSc Building Engineering and Architecture at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He has a PhD in Building Engineering developed partly in Politecnico di Milano and partly in Sydney, Australia, at UNSW University of New South Wales on a topic of «Solar Potential and microscale climate interactions in urban areas». Since 2013, he was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at NTNU. Between October 2017 and July 2020, he was researcher at the Department of Architecture and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Design at NTNU. He started as Associate Professor at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering in August 2020.
Distinctions and Awards
2019 and 2020_The Åsgård research+ program is a French-Norwegian programme for researchers mobilities, aiming at developing scientific exchanges between France and Norway, by allowing researchers in Norway with existing collaborations with a French research group to work jointly towards answering a national or European call for projects.
