Gro Marte Strand
About
Gro Marte Strand is an Associate Professor of Pedagogy at the Department of Teacher Education, NTNU. She holds a teaching qualification and has 14 years of experience as a homeroom teacher, subject teacher, and special education teacher at both primary and lower secondary levels. In 2013, she completed a master’s degree in Counseling Sciences, and in 2020, she earned a Ph.D. in Educational Sciences with the dissertation Experiences and Perspectives on the Transition to Lower Secondary School. Her research interests include educational transitions, school–home collaboration, and school development, with a particular emphasis on formative intervention studies.
Strand has published studies exploring the perspectives of students, teachers, and parents on transitions from early childhood education to school and from primary to lower secondary school, and further to upper secondary education from the student perspective. She has led the local research group Educational Transitions since its establishment in 2019 and is also a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Educational and Life Transitions. Her research has been cited in policy guidelines such as White Paper No. 34 (2023–2024): En mer praktisk skole Bedre læring, motivasjon og trivsel på 5.–10. trinn [A More Practical School – Better Learning, Motivation, and Well-being in Grades 5–10], as well as in Trondheim Municipality’s Plan og rutiner for gode overganger mellom barne- og ungdomsskole i Trondheimsskolen [Plan and Procedures for Smooth Transitions between Primary and Lower Secondary School]. Strand has also provided expert commentary on school transitions in various media outlets, including television, radio, newspapers, and podcasts.
From 2025 to 2027, Strand holds a full-time research position in the project LeadDig: Leadership and Learning for the Development of Teachers’ Professional Digital Competence (2023–2027). The project is conducted as a formative intervention study, is led by Professor May Britt Postholm in collaboration with schools in a municipality, and is funded by the Research Council of Norway. Strand also contributes to the study The Relational Life in Trondheim Schools (RLT), which follows approximately 2,000 students from the start of Grade 7 in autumn 2021 until they complete upper secondary education in spring 2028. RLT is led by Professor Jan Arvid Haugan.
At the university level, Strand has teaching experience in courses within Pedagogy for pre-service teachers. She has also taught Ph.D. candidates in qualitative research methods, as well as in-service teachers pursuing further education in subjects such as School-counseling and the course Selection of Education.
