Dag Roar Hjelme
About
Dag Roar Hjelme is Professor at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Faculty of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Department of Electronic Systems. With more than 30 years of experience in photonics and sensor systems, he has built a distinguished career spanning academia, industry, and innovation.
He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and has since held leading roles as Chief Technology Officer in pioneering sensor companies. He co‑founded several ventures including Glucoset, MedXense, InvivoSense, and Optomed, and was among the researchers who established the Artificial Pancreas Trondheim research group. Earlier in his career, he worked as Senior Scientist at SINTEF Photonics, where he contributed to advances in both photonics and optical communication technologies.
Professor Hjelme has supervised more than 50 master’s and 15 Ph.D. students, published extensively in leading journals and conferences, and is the inventor on multiple international patents in fiber‑optic sensing. His contributions have been recognized with awards including the NTNU Research Prize in Medical Technology and election to the Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences.
His current research focuses on advanced optical sensing technologies for medical diagnostics, energy systems, and biophotonics — continuing a career dedicated to bridging fundamental science with real‑world applications.
