Jan Ketil Simonsen
About
I am a Professor of Anthropology at the Department of Geography and Social Anthropology. I hold a PhD in anthropology from the University of Oslo. My research includes longitudinal fieldwork in Zambia among Mambwe-speaking communities in both rural and urban settings. I focus on social and cultural change among Mambwe migrants in Lusaka, with particular attention to ritual practices, kinship structures, and mutual aid. I am affiliated with the Institute of Economic and Social Research, University of Zambia.
I have conducted commissioned research and evaluations in Zambia and Botswana on urban development, education, and health. More recently, I have carried out fieldwork in Extremadura, Spain, examining the industrialisation of Iberian ham production and the sustainability of forest pastures. I also work with visual anthropology and ethnographic film and am a long-time member of the Nordic Anthropological Film Association.
My teaching includes ethnographic method, social theory related to migration, and multispecies anthropology. I also organise seminars in academic writing for students at all levels. I have previously served as Head of the Department, and as Co-editor of the Norwegian Journal of Anthropology.
